Court admits sugarcane farmers’ plea

Hyderabad, April 05: G. Raghuram of Andhra Pradesh High Court judge on Friday admitted a writ petition regarding non-payment of money to farmers who supplied sugarcane to various units of the Nizam Sugar Factory (NSF).
Several cane farmers’ associations filed the petition complaining that Rs. 65 crore was due to them.
They brought to the notice of the court provisions of AP Sugarcane Act and relevant rules which mandated payment of money to suppliers within 14 days.
The farmers said that neither the Commissioner of Sugar nor Collectors were taking any action in this regard. The officials were duty-bound to invoke the provisions of the Revenue Act for getting relief to farmers. The judge admitted the writ petition and adjourned the case to next Thursday for passing interim orders.
