Madurai, March 28: The Madurai Bench of the Madras High Court directed the Tamil Nadu Chief Secretary and Union Controller of Stamps to file replies by April 17, on the possibility of paying court fee through demand drafts or in cash, in view of 'shortage of court fee stamps.' Passing interim orders on a Public Interest Litigation (PIL), a Division Bench comprising Mr Justice P Murugesan and Mr Justice P K Mishra wanted to know from the Central and State governments, the possibility of paying court fee through DD or by cash in view of the shortage of court fee stamps to be pasted on every petition filed before any court.
The Bench had treated a memorandum submitted by the Madurai Bar Association, to the Chief Justice of Madras High Court A P Shah as a PIL.
The memorandum, submitted on March 24, claimed that court fee stamps of various denominations were not available in Madurai district for the last three months, much to the hardship of lawyers and litigants. - Bureau Report
