CHENNAI: THE Madras High Court has deplored inaction on the part of the State Government to pay promptly the fees due to its own law officers.“It is unfortunate that the respondents (Chief Secretary and the Public (LO) Secretary) has made their own counsel to approach this court for payment of his legal fees and made him a litigant before this court,” observed Justice N Paul Vasanthakumar. The judge was allowing a writ petition from MC Swamy for a direction to the respondents to disburse his professional fees due from the government for a long period. Petitioner was appointed as a special government pleader and he relinquished office on July 27, 2004.He said that bills running to several lakhs of rupees were still pending with the government. Several bills of law officers were also pending for decades, he said. The judge directed the government to settle the bills of the petitioner within four weeks with interest at the rate of 12 per cent per annum.
