Ranchi, April 11: Jharkhand High Court Advocates’ Association today constituted a three-member committee to look into the matter of vacancies in Jharkhand High Court.
The committee comprises senior advocate V. Shivnath, association vice-president Ritu Kumar and secretary-general Ajit Kumar. Kumar told The Telegraph that the committee would be requesting authorities and suggest ways to ensure a quick disposal of cases in the existing system.
“Three of the 12 judges posts in the high court remain vacant. Number of vacant posts would rise to four when Chief Justice M. Karpagavinayagam retires next month. In such a situation authorities must fill up the posts as early as possible,” Kumar said.
Vacancies have always created problems in the court, as the number of cases pile up every day. “In such a situation where at least 20 judges are required to handle the number of cases, authorities have failed to even fill up the existing 12 vacancies in the high court. In such a situation justice system and people suffer,” said criminal lawyer Arwind Kumar Lal.
Kerala has 28 judges in its high court, while the high court in a bigger state like Jharkhand survives with one-third of that number.
