After two years of bravado, the state government has given up hope of upgrading JJ Hospital on par with the All India Institute of Medical Studies (AIIMS).
To upgrade the hospital to the level of AIIMS, the government requires fund to the tune of Rs700 crore, and the state can spare barely Rs120 crore, of which Rs100 crore is a grant from the Centre.
Minister of state for medical education Suresh Shetty said a PIL filed by a Nagpur resident had challenged the decision, saying that by spending the money solely on JJ Hospital, the state was neglecting other hospitals in Maharashtra.
