Modi favours maximum use of technology in judiciary

New Delhi (PTI): Underlining the need for speedy disposal of cases, Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday asked the Centre to set up a task force to explore maximum use of technology at all levels of judiciary.
Addressing the conference of Chief Ministers and Chief Justices here, Modi suggested setting up of at least a Special Court in all states to deal with cyber crime and economic offences.
Modi emphasised that technology should be used to ensure speedy and fair justice delivery system and sought an increase in the number of judges in his state for the disposal of four lakh pending cases.
There has been no appointment of judges in Gujarat in the last six years, he noted.
The Chief Minister said the Gujarat government was aiming to ensure disposal of any litigation within one year of its filing and announced plans to set up new special courts to deal with corruption cases.
He also mooted the idea of converting the forensic science laboratory in Gujarat to a full-fledged university and urged the Centre to allocate more funds for this purpose.
Modi also suggested setting up of family courts in all the urban centres instead of district headquarters'.
Earlier, inaugurating the conference, Prime Minister Manmohan Singh indicated that the Centre might step in to establish family courts as many states have failed to discharge their legal obligation in this regard.
