HC allows AIIMS registrar to join

NEW DELHI: The Delhi High Court on Friday vacated the order of a single-judge bench which had stayed appointment of V P Gupta as registrar of All India Institute of Medical Sciences and allowed him to join the institute. A bench, comprising chief justice Ajit Prakash Shah and justice S Muralidhar, vacated the single-bench decision which had on February 28 restrained Gupta from joining as registrar in the institute. Gupta was sacked by AIIMS director P Venugopal following the agitations over quota. On March 27, AIIMS had moved the HC seeking quashing of the order which stayed the then acting director’s decision to permit the former ad-hoc registrar to rejoin duty. The counsel for AIIMS claimed the single judge had ignored the fact that the petitioners (a group of doctors) had nothing to do with the matter. On February 28, putting a stay on the decision, Justice Anil Kumar had said "Gupta would not be permitted to join the duty as registrar till the court’s further orders." The court had also stayed the then acting director Tirath Dass Dogra’s order for release of Gupta’s financial dues pertaining to a period from March 6, 2007 to January 7, 2008. On Friday, the bench also directed speedy hearing of the petition filed by the faculty association.
