Judges not under RTI purview: SC

NEW DELHI: The Supreme Court on Thursday dismissed a PIL seeking to bring judges of the apex court and high courts under the purview of Right to Information Act. Petitioner K G Kannabiran, who is the president of People's Union for Civil Liberties (PUCL), argued before a bench comprising Justices Arijit Pasayat and P Sathasivam that right to know was derived from the concept of freedom of speech and information should not be withheld unless it was detrimental to public security. "Under the constitutional scheme, the courts are also part of the democratic process. The SC and the HCs and their judges are constitutional functionaries and they are accountable as any other constitutional functionary as far as their conduct or the discharge of administrative functions are concerned," he said.
