Lawyers ransack courtroom

Allahabad, May 14 Custodial death Judicial work suffers as Allahabad HC premises evacuated
A Day after the custodial death of High Court advocate S K Awasthi, agitated lawyers ransacked a courtroom, reportedly of Justice B S Chauhan who had sentenced Awasthi to one-month imprisonment in a contempt case. Sensing trouble, the High Court premises were evacuated on the instruction of Chief Justice HL Gokhale.
The Rapid Action Force was deployed for the purpose.
Later, the protesters assembled outside the court and staged a demonstration. They demanded transfer of Justice Chauhan and action against the policemen who had chained Awasthi in the hospital where was undergoing treatment for renal failure and died later.
According to Allahabad High Court Bar Association (AHBA) president V C Mishra, Awasthi was sentenced to one month’s simple imprisonment by Justice Chauhan after the lawyer had levelled certain allegations against the judge. He added that Awasthi was trying to expose the corrupt practices prevalent in the court.
Late on Tuesday night, Awasthi’s parents lodged an FIR with the Cantonment police against unidentified persons in connection with their son’s death.
It is learnt that taking cognisance of the ransacking incident, the Registrar General has directed the police to lodge an FIR against those responsible for the incident.
Though SSP B K Singh denied to have received any written order in this regard, he said he has been asked to take necessary actions against the people responsible for the vandalism.
Earlier in the morning, Awasthi’s body was consigned to flames at the Rasoolabadh ghat in the presence of Chief Justice H L Gokhale and several other judges of the High Court.
Due to the agitation and lawyers’ strike, no judicial work could take place on Wednesday. The AHBA has also decided to observe black day on Monday, said the president of the association.
