The government on Thursday approached the Supreme Court against a Calcutta High Court order staying 27 percent quota for Other Backward Classes (OBCs) in the Indian Institute of Management, Calcutta (IIM-C).
The apex court was likely to take up the matter Friday, a senior official in the human resource development ministry told IANS.
The high court on Wednesday stayed the implementation of the OBC quota at the IIM-C on a petition filed by an aspirant, Sayan Guha, challenging the government policy.
The Supreme Court had heard a petition challenging the quota policy, but gave the government the green signal to go ahead with it - keeping the 'creamy layer', or the elite among the OBCs, out of its ambit.
The matter would again come up before the high court for hearing June 9.
