HC converts students petition into PIL

PANAJI —A letter filed by a student of Bhatikar Model School, Margao, Master Shiddanth P Phadte, making grievance of non-availability of free textbooks, has been converted into a Public Interest Litigation by the Goa branch of Bombay High Court.Â
The Division bench comprising of Justice S A Bobde and Justice R C Chavan, has issued notices to the state government, Director of education and Bhatikar Model School, for the same. The matter will come up for hearing next week.Â
According to the petition the government had promised to give free textbooks to students of classes 1 to 10, this academic year. It said that although schools started on June 5, some text books have not been given to the students yet, who are suffering due to it.Â
The petitioner has also charged the Government of discrimination, as some of the students have been given the books while others have not got them. He had asked the court to reprimand the authorities who are responsible for the mess to immediately provide the text books. It is also requested that strict instructions be given to provide books in time in the next academic year.
