BJP for law to insulate India against Hyde Act

NEW DELHI: After making it clear that it will renegotiate the India-United States nuclear agreement if it comes to power, the Bharatiya Janata Party on Friday favoured the enactment of a law to insulate India against the implications of the Hyde Act.
L.K. Advani, the party’s Prime Ministerial face, said he was still not convinced with the government’s argument that the deal does not in any way put constraints on the country’s nuclear strategy.
“I am not convinced about it,” he told NDTV’s ‘Walk the Talk’ programme.
He said the government could have adopted a course of action by “amending the Indian law so that the Hyde Act would not apply to us” as suggested by him.
Asked whether such an amendment or protection could be created, he said: “It can be created.”
The main Opposition party had been opposing the deal saying it would affect India’s nuclear programme by putting a cap on future atomic tests. — PTITHE HINDU; Saturday, Mar 22, 2008
