Govt pulled up for lack of facilities at law office

Chandigarh, March 14 A division Bench of the Punjab and Haryana High Court pulled up the Punjab government for not having adequate staff, infrastructute at the Punjab Law Commission office.
A public interest litigation was filed by advocate H C Arora demanding the court to ask the government to provide proper facilities and infrastructure to the chairman, Retd. Justice Amarbir Singh Gill, for the proper functioning of the law commission.
He stated that except a member-secretary, no other member has been appointed by the Punjab government.
Thus, the Law Commission, which has a term of two years, is yet to start its functioning, though the present Chairman of the law commission was appointed eight months back in June 2007.
The petitioner pointed out that the chairman sits in a small room with the member-secretary and just have a computer for their use.
He added that the two clerks provided to the Law Commission have no place to sit and keep wandering on the corridors due to lack of space.
The Bench comprising Chief Justice Vijender Kumar Jain and Justice Jaswant Singh during the resumed hearing of the PIL, a visibly annoyed Chief Justice asked the additional advocate general: “If you don’t have the will, why did you appoint law commissions. You cannot be permitted to deal with the retired judges like this.”
