HC comes to aid of blind ASI staffer

NEW DELHI: Delhi High Court has issued notice to the Director of Estates on a contempt petition filed by a visually impaired man, an employee with Archaeological Survey of India (ASI), alleging that the Estates Office failed to allot him a suitable official accommodation near his workplace despite a court order. Issuing notice to the Director of Estates, Justice Pradeep Nandrajog asked the officer to explain the reason as to why he should not be held guilty for contempt of court by May 1. In October last year, the Court had directed the Ministry of Urban Development and its Directorate of Estate for allotment of a Type-II government accommodation to Shiv Ram, a Monument Attendant with Safdarjung Tomb in south Delhi, as per his preference. He had requested authorities to accommodate him in areas like Kidwai Nagar, Lakshmibai or Netaji Nagar and the court had given two months time to the directorate. After the enactment of the Disabilities (Equal Opportunities, Protection of Rights and Full Participation) Act, the government is under a duty and obligation to ensure that persons with disabilities are reasonably accommodated so that they are not confronted with existing barriers, the Court had held.
