Karnataka HC admits petitions

Bangalore, March 13: The Karnataka High Court on Monday admitted writ petitions challenging the Centre's proposed action to close down operations of the existing Bangalore airport once the Bangalore International Airport is opened for traffic. The Court directed the counsel for the State Government and the Central Government to take notice of the petitions, and ordered issue of notices to the Airport Authority of India and other respondents.According to the petitioners, G R Mohan, B Krishna Bhat, R K Mishra and others, the decision to close down Bangalore airport would cause inconvenience to "short-haul" passengers who at present travel short distance to the present airport whereas they would be required to travel about 40 kms to the new airport located at Devanalli in Bangalore Rural district.Chief Justice Cyriac Joseph and Justice B V Nagarathna, constituting a Division Bench, after hearing the counsel for the parties, admitted the public interest writ petitions.Hearing of the petitions was adjourned to March 25.The Union Government and Bangalore International Airport Ltd filed their objections to the petitions.
