Another PIL on heritage ‘vandalism’

Srinagar, Apr 20: Concerned over the alleged indifferent attitude of the government towards the cultural heritage of Kashmir, the Valley Citizen Council (VCC) has filed a petition before the state High Court (JKHC) praying for “appropriate directions for the protection and conservation of artifacts, monuments and excavation sites.” The petitioner has shown the state and the center run departments including Archaeological Survey of India, Archaeological Department, Srinagar, Language, J&K Art and Cultural Academy and Department Archaeology and Archives University of Kashmir as respondents. Reports said a 12-page petition filed by VCC General Secretary, Imdad Saqi prays for issuance of directions for “conservation, protection and safe keeping. And making the respondents accountable and transparent with regard to ancient and medieval artifacts, excavation of sites and heritage monuments.” Saqi said that a century old SPS museum was in a “pathetic condition” and that the artifacts it houses can “hardly survive the threat of time.” He said, “The treasure hunters and robbers plunder the museum whenever a chance comes their way and the articles which are away from their evil eyes have now fallen prey to rust and decay.” The museum houses some exceptionally rare Hindu sculptures from 2nd to 7th century, the petitioner said adding the canons of Dogra period are getting weathered. The General Secretary said other such archaeological finds include a 4th century bronze frame depicting all incarnations of Vaishnu, a massive 4th century Shivalingam and numerous old coins and weaponry. “The legacy of Kashmir’s ancient and medieval past will be wiped off forever if the present situation is not brought under control.” The petitioner added that the present “negligent scenario is how the heritage is being treated.”He also alleged that 84 rare coins including gold and silver were missing from the SPS museum. Few days ago, Kashmir University Students Union had filed a similar PIL. (with inputs UNI)
