New Delhi: The Supreme Court on Monday directed controversial RJD MP Pappu Yadav, sentenced to life imprisonment in the CPI(M) leader Ajit Sarkar murder case, to move the Patna High Court for bail.
A Bench, headed by Justice S B Sinha, passed the order while disposing off Yadav's bail petition. He had earlier moved the apex court, prior to his conviction, when his bail plea was rejected by the High Court.
The RJD MP was directed to approach the High Court with a fresh plea for permission to travel abroad for his treatment relating to "morbid obesity."
The Bench refrained from passing any order on the two pleas of Pappu Yadav as, during the pendency of his bail plea, a trial court on February 14 sentenced him to life imprisonment for the murder.
The RJD MP from Madhepura is accused of killing Sarkar, a CPI (M) leader from Purnea, in 1998 with the help of gangsters, including Rajan Tiwari.
He was shifted from Beur jail in Patna to Tihar jail here after the apex court had taken strong exception to the "five star" treatment being provided to him despite being an undertrial in the case.
