HC holds void ‘election’ of CPI(M) MLA

The Kerala High Court today held as void the election of Communist Party of India (Marxist) (CPI-M) Legislator M J Jacob from Piravom constituency in the April 2006 Assembly polls.Mr Justice Thottathil B Radhakrishnan ruled that Mr M J Jacob had personally attacked veteran leader T M Jacob in the polls, which amounted to character assassination. Hence, the court held the election of Mr M J Jacob as void under the Representation of the People's Act.Mr T M Jacob, who heads the Kerala Congress (Jacob), had contested the polls as a Democratic Indira Congress-Karunakaran (DIC-K) candidate. Earlier, he had allied his party with the DIC-K. But after the defeat, he had snapped ties with the DIC-K and returned to the UDF. UNI
