PANAJI: The High Court of Bombay at Goa has directed Jain Udyog Pvt Ltd to stop operation of its sponge iron plant at Santona on the banks of river Kalay in Sanvordem till further orders. The order comes in the wake of a contempt petition filed by Goa Foundation. The petitioner stated that pursuant to the recommendations of NEERI, the Goa State Pollution Control Board (GSPCB) had ordered closure of the unit. However, the company challenged it before the high court. The HC had earlier asked the GSPCB to pass a fresh order with a direction that the order will not be given effect to for a period of 3 weeks from the date of its communication. During the hearing, counsel for petitioner, Norma Alvares, pointed out the GSPCB passed an order granting conditional consent to the company.
