As of now, it was only in the films that one can see the proceedings of the court and was not in practice otherwise, but now time has come when videography or visual recording of the court proceedings has become important for various reasons.
FOR THE first time in the history of Indian judiciary, the doors of court rooms were thrown open to the television cameras and print cameramen to record the proceedings of the court dispensing speedy justice, which is often demanded by the critics seeking more transparency in the system.
An experience unique to the country’s Apex Court, where the cameras are kept 100 meters away from the court rooms, the judges including Chief Justice, KG Balakrishnan and Justices Ashok Bhan, Arijit Pasayat and Aftab Alam were without their black robes and sat close to the litigants under the glare of a camera and dispensed justice by thrashing out settlements.
Replying to a media query that is this the first step towards videographing the Apex Court proceedings, the Chief Justice said, "You may say so, but the proceedings were not strictly court proceedings though they were held inside the Chief Justice of India’s (CJI’s) court and in court number two of the Apex Court.
“The time has not come to allow cameras inside Supreme Court (SC) proceedings," the CJI said, adding, "Ultimately time will come when it will be allowed."
He said, "Sometimes there are embarrassing moments during court hearings. There are so many sensitive matters and many acrimonious exchanges between lawyers. It will take some time before the courts allowed video recording of their proceedings."
Chief Justice Balakrishnan, who has initiated many new step for clearing the huge backlog of cases that slows down the wheels of justice, said the focus was on making the common people in rural areas aware of their rights under existing laws and providing them a helping hand to seek redressal of their grievances at the earliest possible.
