Chandigarh, May 1 Notices have been issued to the Punjab Financial Commissioner and the State of Punjab on a public interest litigation (PIL) filed by the Consortium of Indian Farmers Associations, Patiala.
Highlighting the plight of farmers in Punjab, the petitioner has demanded the quashing of a notification dated April 16 in which the Punjab government has directed that arhityas or buyers shall make payment directly to the seller through account payee cheques immediately after the weighing of the crop is over.
Moreover, it has been directed in the notification that the payment when made shall be recovered by the market committee.
The petitioner has stated that the notification will only harass farmers as the move will only benefit commission agents and further deteriorate their condition.
The petitioner has submitted that the Punjab government had been apathetic towards the condition of the farmers.
It has been stated that suicides among farmers is on the rise because of the arbitrary policies of the government.
“All manufacturers are allowed to price their products, except farmers. To make things worse, the government always prices crop produce at very low rates, thus adversely affecting the farmers,” alleges the petition. adversely affecting the farmers,” alleges the petition.
