'Rs 1,618 ce relief plan for Kashmiri migrants'

NEW DELHI: In response to a PIL seeking UN-mandated package for Kashmiri Pandits by giving them the status of internally displaced persons, the Centre on Friday told SC that it had framed a Rs 1,618 crore package for their rehabilitation in Jammu & Kashmir. This information was given by solicitor-general G E Vahanvati to a bench comprising Chief Justice K G Balakrishnan and Justices R V Raveendran and M K Sharma. The SG sought four weeks time to file the central package before the court. The SG was responding to a PIL filed by NGO ‘All India Kashmiri Samaj' accusing the Centre and J&K government of apathy towards the cause of the Pandits, who have been systematically forced out of the Valley. The package included Rs 770 crore assistance for repair/construction of fully or partially damaged or unused houses, Rs 150 crore for construction of group housing societies for those who were forced to sell their houses and Rs 110 crore for their transit accommodation till they got permanent houses.
