THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Chief Minister V. S. Achuthanandan has said that land reforms legislation which laid the foundation for Kerala’s progress is faced with grave challenges.
“Vested interests say that the Kerala Land Reforms Act must be withdrawn as it has served its purpose. This is nothing but the argument of the globalisation era. Real estate dealers, who are gaining in strength in Kerala, have only contempt for the Act. They do not see that it is a historic piece of legislation that made Kerala what it is today. It has as its backdrop the blood, sweat and tears of the poor,” the Chief Minister said here on Thursday while inaugurating a three-day national seminar on ‘Revisiting Land Reforms in Kerala,’ organised by the C. Achutha Menon Foundation.
Mr. Achuthanandan pointed out that the beneficiaries of land reforms faced the prospect of losing their land holdings with real estate dealers buying up small pieces of land from them with tempting offers and by exploiting their helplessness.
