HC stays suspension of TNSTC driver

Madurai, June 26: The Madurai bench of the Madras High Court on Wednesday stayed the suspension of a Tamil Nadu State Transport Corporation (TNSTC) driver here, who refused to drive the bus continuously for 48 hours, and issued notice to the General Manager of the TNSTC, Madurai Region.
Justice K Suguna ordered the notice on a petition by K Raja Mohammed, a driver attached to Melur depot.
The petitioner submitted that he was on 24 hour duty on June 4, 2008, ending at 2 PM on June 5. But the branch manager asked him to work that day also. The driver then said he would not be able to concentrate for another 24 hours and suggested that nine persons belonging to a union, be engaged.
He alleged that workers of the union were threatening him for putting forward the suggestion. He was suspended from June 11 on 'false allegations' that he refused to come to work and abused the Branch Manager, Raja said.
The petitioner said that asking him to work for 48 hours was against Public interest and service law. As he was the secretary of a union, he had been suspended at the instance of the rival union, he alleged and added that it was was the duty of officials to maintain on duty workers. - Agencies
