Chennai, June12 The Madras High Court Wednesday directed Nilgiris District Collector and Deputy Director Geology and Mines to present before the court on June 16 with relevant records on illegal quarrying/mining in the hill areas.
Passing further orders on a public interest litigation petition, the First Bench of Chief Justice A K Ganguly and Justice F M Ibrahim Kallifulla observed "we are not satisfied about the casual nature in which the report is filed. We ask the government pleader to look into the matter and see that order of the bench is strictly followed." "We have made it clear that the order passed by the Bench inorder to protect the interests of the state against illegal mining should be implemented." The High Court, on the above petition, had earlier directed the authorities to stop illegal quarrying and mining in the hill areas of the Nilgiris district.
It also asked the officials to seal all illegal mines and quarries and directed the District Forest Officer and the Deputy Director Geology and Mines to submit a report to the court about illegal quarrying and mining in the hill areas and the damage they caused. -Agencies
