New Delhi (PTI): The Supreme Court on Monday appointed retired Rajasthan High Court Chief Justice Anil Dev Singh to head a committee for examining the contentious Mullaperiyar dam row involving Kerala and Tamil Nadu.
A bench headed by Justice Arijt Pasayat said the committee would examine the contentions of the rival states on the issue and submit its report to by September 8.
Tamil Nadu and Kerala have been at loggerheads over the Mullaperiyar dam located in Kerala's Idduki district. The issue involved is that the century-old dam though located in Kerala is used for supply of drinking and irrigation water in Tamil Nadu.
Kerala wants the dam to be demolished on the ground that it has outlived its life and poses a serious threat from an imminent collapse.
