Justice A.K. Ganguly sworn in CJ of Madras HC

Chennai (PTI): Justice Ashok Kumar Ganguly was on Monday sworn in as the new Chief Justice of Madras High Court, replacing Ajit Prakash Shah, who was recently transferred and posted as Chief Justice of Delhi High Court.
In an official ceremony attended by Chief Minister M Karunanidhi and some of his cabinet colleagues, Electricity Minister Arcot N Veeraswamy and Law Minister Duraimurugan, Governor Surjit Singh Barnala administered the oath to Justice Ganguly, who was previously Chief Justice of the Orissa High Court.
This was Karunanidhi's first official engagement after he was discharged from a private hospital on Sunday where he underwent treatment for back and neck pain.
The DMK leader was brought on a wheelchair to the dais in Durbar Hall at the Raj Bhavan here where the oath-taking ceremony was held.
The Chief Minister presented a yellow coloured silk shawl and bouquet of flowers to Justice Ganguly after the latter was sworn in.
Born on February 3, 1947, Justice Ganguly did his LLB from Calcutta University in 1970 and enrolled as an advocate in the Calcutta High Court the next year.
Justice Ganguly also practiced in the Supreme Court of India and handled cases dealing with Constitution, Labour, Company, Education, Customs and Criminal matters.
Having served as Judge in the Calcutta and Patna High Courts, Justice Ganguly last served as the Chief Justice of the Orissa High Court, an official release said.
