Chandigarh, March 14 The real benefit of globalisation is to ensure that the fruits of globalisation reach the common man and basic amenities are provided to the poor especially villagers. This stated by Chief Justice of India Justice K G Balakrishnan at a seminar ‘Law, Globalisation and Common Man”.
Attended by a conglomerate of judges from the Supreme Court and the Punjab and Haryana High Court, the seminar was organised by the Asia Pacific Jurist Association, Punjab and Haryana Chapter. Discussing the merits and demerits of globalisation, the judges held that one should not compromise with social and cultural values at the cost of globalisation.
Appreciating the effort of the APJA, the CJI said globalisation is here to stay. “If fruits of globalisation do not percolate to the lower strata of the society, then it is meaningless. India can never be proud to have affluence of wealth in the ocean of poverty.”
While Justice H S Bedi of the Supreme Court observed that condition of common man needs to be alleviated and not allow developed countries to affect us.
Chief Justice of India Justice K G Balakrishnan said, “Globalisation is no longer a subject as to whether we should have it or not because it is there. Just because capitalistic economy has come, I am sure we will not forget our socialistic rights. The real achievement is how far we can give benefit of globalisation to the common man”.
Emphasising that the prices of food and pharmaceuticals should not be increased in the garb of globalisation, he said, “Prices of food and pharmaceuticals should not be increased. Basic amenities need to be given to villagers.”
When questioned as to whether the public faith in judiciary was diminishing, the CJI said, “No not at all. The faith is not diminishing”. However, when questioned about his comment on the accountability of judges, he refused to comment.
