Chennai (PTI): The Madras High Court has imposed restrictions on religious and political functions in public places, giving relief to people staying nearby.
The move is expected to ensure free movement of people and vehicles in many city areas.
A division bench comprising Chief Justice A K Ganguly and Justice F M Ibrahim Kalifullah said such meetings should not be allowed to continue after 10 pm.
Also, loud speakers must not be allowed to play at a level higher than permissible limit under pollution laws. Organisers of the meeting should dismantle temporary erections and fix the roads back to their previous condition.
The court said meetings or functions causing obstruction to people should not be allowed to continue for over three hours at a stretch or held during rush hours.
If the police commissioner and the corporation commissioner grant permission to hold meetings in a street, authorities should ensure that the road is not blocked and sufficient space is left for movement of pedestrians and vehicles.
At the same time, said the court, corporations are open to levy charges or damages in compliance with rules and parties holding such meetings should deposit the amount before permission is granted.
