Mumbai (PTI): Bombay High Court on Friday asked the Secretaries of Union Health, Finance and Environment and Forest Ministry to remain present in court in connection with a public interest litigation about toxic toys.
The PIL filed by Consumer Welfare Association of India contends that toys manufactured in India and those imported from China contain toxic substances like lead and cadmium.
The PIL seeks the court to direct the state and central bodies to initiate action against sale of such toys.
Petitioner's counsel Rajeev Chavan today pointed out to the court that no affidavit was filed by the Union Government in the PIL.
Additional Solicitor General then informed the court about the lack of assistance from concerned officers in the matter.
Division bench of Chief Justice Swatanter Kumar and Justice A P Deshpande asked the Union secretaries to remain present in court after two weeks to explain the delay in filing the affidavit despite giving them time to do so.
The PIL will come up for further hearing on August 7.
