NAGERCOIL: The Madurai bench of the High Court has directed the Kanyakumari district administration to file an affidavit explaining why no steps were taken to remove encroachments on Thaniyadi kulam tank at Kalkulam village.Pronouncing the verdict on a writ petition filed by Conservation of Nature Trust, Nagercoil, and Lakshmana Pillai, a farmer, a two-member bench comprising chief justice AP Sha and Justice Nagamuthu has directed that the encroachments be removed and the 1.6 acre area restored to its original position.The petitioners have included Kanyakumari district collector, DRO, Tahsildar of Kalkulam taluk and president of the Thenkarai village panchayat as respondents.The tank was encroached upon by land grabbers. Even though Rs 2 lakh had been allotted for the renovation of the tank, desiltation works could not be carried out due to encroachments.
