High Court asks for action plan for removal of encroachments around Jogeshwari caves

Mumbai, July 23 The Bombay High Court on Wednesday directed the Archaeological Survey of India, state government and the BMC to present an action plan for the removal of encroachments from the site around the Jogeshwari caves, a heritage monument.
Last year, the court had directed the removal of encroachments from around heritage monuments. The court had earlier appointed a committee to suggest steps for preservation of caves in the city through “minimum intervention”.
Amicus Curiae Shiraz Rustomji had told the court that Jogeshwari caves needed the attention of the court as there were encroachments on top of the caves and not just in the prohibited area around them.
The court was hearing a PIL filed by Janhit Manch, an NGO for the conservation of the Jogeshwari, Mahakali, Kanheri and Mandapeshwa caves, based on Newsline reports on the neglected condition of the caves.
